Facts about toothpaste most people do not know
Toothpaste is used by the average Australian twice a day, every day, from around age one, yet most people have never received formal guidance on which product to choose. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) estimates that tooth decay remains the most prevalent chronic disease in Australia, affecting more than 90 per cent of adults and around 42 per cent of children aged six to fourteen. In NSW alone, poor oral hygiene costs the public health system hundreds of millions of dollars each year in preventable treatment.
The dental aisle of any Port Macquarie supermarket or pharmacy now stocks upwards of 60 different toothpaste products. Many carry health claims : whitening, charcoal-activated, natural, fluoride-free, sensitivity relief, enamel repair, but very few of those claims are supported by the same level of clinical evidence. The result is that well-intentioned patients routinely choose toothpastes that either fail to protect their teeth or, in some cases, actively cause harm over time.
Fluoride is the clinically proven, ADA-endorsed active ingredient that prevents cavities by remineralising enamel and disrupting the acid cycle produced by decay-causing bacteria. NSW Health recommends fluoride toothpaste for every age group from the first tooth onwards. Yet a growing number of products on Australian shelves now market themselves specifically on the absence of fluoride, a trend that is contributing to a measurable rise in preventable decay, particularly in children.
At Hastings Dental Centre in Port Macquarie, our team sees the real-world outcomes of toothpaste choices at every single appointment. This guide sets out the evidence-based recommendations our Port Macquarie dentists give to patients every day, and identifies the products we consistently advise against, so that every household in the mid-north coast region can make a fully informed choice.

Dentist-recommended toothpastes: what to use
1. Colgate Total — best all-round toothpaste Australia 2026
Contains 1080 ppm fluoride plus stannous fluoride for antibacterial action. Protects against cavities, gingivitis, plaque, and sensitivity in one formula. Our Port Macquarie dentists recommend it as the go-to daily toothpaste for most healthy adults. It holds the ADA Seal of Acceptance and is among the most studied toothpaste formulas available in Australia.
2. Sensodyne Repair & Protect — best toothpaste for sensitive teeth Port Macquarie
The NovaMin technology deposits a mineral layer over exposed dentinal tubules, reducing sensitivity with consistent use. Recommended after teeth whitening in Port Macquarie, following gum recession treatment, or for patients who experience sharp pain with hot or cold food. Use twice daily for a minimum of four weeks to assess results.
3. Colgate Kids (500 ppm) — children’s toothpaste NSW
Children under six need a lower-concentration fluoride formula because they may swallow paste while brushing. At 500 ppm, this range protects developing teeth safely. Use a rice-grain amount under age three, and a pea-sized amount from three to six. Endorsed by the NSW School Dental Service for early childhood dental programs.
Toothpastes to avoid: what Port Macquarie dentists warn against?
1. Charcoal toothpaste — is it safe? No. Here is why.
Charcoal toothpaste is the product our Port Macquarie dental team is most frequently asked about. Most charcoal formulas contain no fluoride and carry a high Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) score. A systematic review published in the British Dental Journal found no reliable evidence of whitening benefit from activated charcoal in toothpaste. Regular use can abrade enamel and expose the softer dentine layer underneath — increasing sensitivity and long-term cavity risk. We do not recommend charcoal toothpaste as a daily product for any patient.
2. Fluoride-free ‘natural’ toothpastes — no cavity protection
Removing fluoride from toothpaste removes its only proven cavity-fighting mechanism. Coconut oil, essential oils, and clay have no peer-reviewed evidence of caries prevention. The ADA Australia does not recommend fluoride-free toothpastes as a standalone oral hygiene product. Patients who have used fluoride-free toothpaste long-term may benefit from a cavity assessment at our Port Macquarie dental clinic.
3. Adult toothpaste for children under six — fluorosis risk NSW
Standard adult formulas contain 1000–1500 ppm fluoride. For young children who swallow paste, regular ingestion at this concentration during tooth development carries a risk of dental fluorosis — permanent white spotting on adult teeth. Always use a 500 ppm children’s formula until age six.
Specialty toothpastes for specific dental needs
Some patients require more targeted formulas. The following are prescribed or recommended at Hastings Dental Centre for specific clinical conditions:
- High cavity risk or dry mouth: Colgate Neutrafluor 5000 (prescription — 5000 ppm fluoride), available from our Port Macquarie dental clinic.
- Active gum disease or gingivitis: Parodontax or Colgate Total (stannous fluoride).
- Orthodontic patients — braces or Invisalign Port Macquarie: GC Tooth Mousse Plus (CPP-ACP remineralisation).
- Dry mouth linked to medication: Biotene Fluoride Toothpaste.
How to choose the right toothpaste in Port Macquarie?
When selecting a toothpaste, check four things: fluoride concentration (1000 ppm minimum for adults; 500 ppm for children under six); the ADA Seal of Acceptance; an RDA score under 70 for everyday use; and the active ingredient that addresses your specific concern — stannous fluoride for gum health, NovaMin or arginine for sensitivity, CPP-ACP for remineralization.
If you are unsure, bring your current toothpaste to your next checkup at Hastings Dental Centre. Our team will review it as part of your oral health assessment and make a personalised recommendation at no additional cost.
